Diabetes can cause damage to the eyes in many ways, including causing cataract development, double vision, and diabetic retinopathy. The good news is that patients who are able to keep their blood sugars under tight control can often live their entire life without ever losing vision from diabetes. In addition to diet control, exercise, and medication, close monitoring of blood sugar will help patients with diabetes preserve their vision. Patients with diabetes need to have a yearly dilated eye exam to check for diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy can be treated with laser surgery and/or medication if it is vision threatening.

Walla Walla Eye Center can perform annual diabetic eye exams and treat diabetic retinopathy, if indicated. Contact us today to set up your appointment.
